What customers say?

“ Best potato salad of my life and we loved the fried taro dish. The seared mackeral cheeks and grilled shell were a bit too gamey for my liking though it might be a personal preference. The sake recommendation was totally on point. ”

“ Nice food, sake and very friendly staff. Authentic Japanese Izakaya. Many dishes from Yamaggata prefecture. Japanese menu only. ”

- Kazushi Saiki -

“ Best local Izakaya... if you think about local experience of fresh fish & Japanese drinks , go this place ... All busy place Izakaya like Shinjuku Shinuya is ok but this place is better .. ”

- Roy B -

“ Stumbled upon this place because the izakaya we were going to was closed. Typical izakaya frequented mostly by locals. Had whale here for the first time as well as a host of othdr dishes recommended by the owner anx his wife. Good sake selection. Reasonable prices. ”

- Alex Delechambre -

“ I had whale for the first time in my life and I love it. They have a variety of Nihonshu sake options and also dishes using fish. I also had ‘namerou’ for the first time. It’s like miso flavoured fish and vegetable salad. It went well with Nihonshu. I was busy to eat and didn’t take any photos, but definitely I’ll be back here! Note that their menu doesn’t have any photos. If you are not familiar with Japanese texts, it would be good to ask the shop staff for advice. The menu is on the menu book and also on the wall! ”

“ The food was delicious, one of the best I had in Tokyo, and the staff was nice and kind. ”

- Michal Treger -

“ I revisited Hatagaya's Uotada, which appears as Araku in the TV drama "Wakakozake." Three kinds of fish: yellowtail, amberjack, and flounder. The fat was rich, and the sweetness of the fat was incredibly delicious. When it comes to this, sake is what sake lovers crave. Finishing off with a glass of sake from the chef's hometown of Yamagata, the sourness, sweetness, and umami blend together to bring you happiness. Oh, so delicious. This combination is the best. I'm so happy. *Psh* ■Three-piece Platter 2000 yen Sapporo Akaboshi 950 yen ■Dewazakura Honjozo Chilled Kurasuzumi 850 yen ■Appetizer Priceless (excluding tax) ”

“ 12/3 Went to Kitasenju and then back to my lodging, Hatagaya. After two failed attempts, I finally made it here on my third try. The door was always closed, but this time it was open, so I went in. It was around 8:00 on a weekday, but the place was spacious. There were only 4-5 tables, and I was alone, so I sat at the counter. I heard the whale sashimi was famous, so I ordered it and a bottle of beer. I also wanted ankimo, so I ordered that. The whale meat tasted like horse meat (no smell), and the ankimo wasn't as good as the one I had at another izakaya last time (it was smooth like ice cream, but this time it was thick?). I wasn't feeling well, so I couldn't try the other dishes. Since it was featured in Wakako and Sake, it felt like I was in a drama. The staff were generally friendly, and the food was above average. The customers seemed to be quiet? ”
